Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence To Reshape the Retail Sector

With the pace of digital transformations in the retail sector accelerating, a metaverse-favoured virtual reality and artificial intelligence facilitate enhanced and personalised approach for consumers.

A digital-driven transformation of the world has likely reshaped varied integrated sectors where retail technology stands as a frontier with technologies extending from artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to blockchain and personalisation. These innovations are anticipated to soar further in future periods with no signs of slowing down. For example, the rise in personalised experiences has resulted in an elevated increase in sustainability, which is rapidly evolving in the retail space due to a digitisation-driven approach.

One testamental transformation is the consistent rise of the metaverse, which is highly anticipated to lead the retail sector in the future. Generally, a metaverse is a mere virtual world allowing people to interact with each other and a range of digital objects and experiences. Following a consistent advancement in virtual reality (VR) technology, retailers are highly reliant upon this very technology, owing to its induced ability to engage with customers via innovative approaches.

Various researchers have elucidated that the global virtual reality market will likely reach 45 billion USD in future years with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.3 per cent. In addition to the adoption of VR technology in the retail sector, several other factors are likely to stimulate the growth of the retail industry accordingly. Through the metaverse, immersive and interactive experiences are facilitated for consumers, including a virtual try-on, testing out products, and exploring virtual stores while gathering valuable data on customer preferences and behaviours accordingly.

Furthermore, because virtual stores and experiences are easily accessible from remote areas, the metaverse emerges as a viable and effective option for retailers in reaching global audiences. As a result, retailers will be able to expand their reach and profit scale by entering new markets and driving critical business growth.

Similarly, artificial intelligence (AI) lands as another advanced and safer approach in the retail sector owing to its seamless roleplay in enabling chatbots, personalised recommendations, predictive analytics, and automated customer service. That is, deploying AI in the retail sector creates tremendous opportunities and has radically begun to transform the sector with customised interactions for increased efficiency and profit yielding. As a result, scientists have stated that nearly 95 per cent of customer interactions in the future will likely be powered by artificial intelligence. As a result, AI has undoubtedly emerged as a critical tool for retailers seeking to stay ahead of the competition.

However, rather than a mere customer experience factor, AI holds plausible capabilities for retailers in optimising their operations, from inventory management to supply chain logistics. For instance, robust AI-powered demand forecasting enables retailers to make accurate predictions of consumer demands and adjust their inventory levels critically, while reducing waste and increasing efficiency. In addition, customer data is effectively analysed, favouring critical insights. Thus, it enables retailers to make better and more informed business decisions.
