Star Media Groups Strategic Move Towards a CDP: Optimising Audience Engagement in the Era of Data-Driven Decision Making

In today's rapidly evolving media landscape, effective data strategies are essential for maintaining competitive advantage. At Star Media Group (SMG), Malaysia's leading diversified media group, we've taken a big step forward by making a switch from a Data Management Platform (DMP) to a Customer Data Platform (CDP) focused on first-party data. This strategic move is crucial for us to unlock our data assets into actionable insights, further enrich user experiences, and drive sustainable business growth.

Like most modern publishers, we faced the need to deliver personalised content at scale, manage fragmented audience data across touchpoints, and navigate the evolving privacy landscape—particularly the deprecation of third-party cookies. In addition, more sophisticated, behavior-based advertising programs demand richer audience insights than basic demographics. Unifying multi-channel data into a single customer view was a fundamental challenge we had to overcome.

Our response was a clear strategic step: implement a CDP. Our key objectives are threefold.

First, we aim to achieve a unified, 360-degree view of our consumers. This involves breaking down data silos across our various platforms—including online news portals like The Star (thestar.com.my) and mStar (mstar.com. my), two radio stations, and multiple offline events—and creating unified individual profiles. The result is a holistic view of audience behaviour and interests throughout the SMG journey, with the capability to perform accurate omnichannel attribution.

Second, this unified customer view powers marketing automation and personalisation. With more sophisticated segmentation, we can scale targeted campaigns, improve operational efficiency, and significantly increase reader engagement by delivering highly relevant content and personalised recommendations.

Third, these efforts all feed into our top business priority: increasing revenue and customer lifetime value (LTV). With cohesive data, we can optimise ad efficiency through targeted advertising, simplify the subscriber experience to reduce churn, and enable data-driven decision-making across the organisation.

“Star Media Group's transformation to a CDP represents more than a technology upgrade—it's a strategic imperative to maximise audience engagement, personalise experiences, and futureproof our growth in a data-driven world”

Central to our evolution is a robust first-party data strategy. In an era of heightened privacy regulations and the decline of third-party cookies, direct data capture is essential. It allows us to build direct relationships with our audience, enhance personalisation, reduce reliance on third-party data, and address privacy concerns with transparency.

The distinction between our former DMP and the new CDP is crucial. While DMPs primarily supported ad targeting using anonymous third-party data with short-term data retention, a CDP enables unified customer profiles for personalisation across all channels. It manages both anonymous data and Personally Identifiable Information (PII), prioritises first-party and zero-party data, and supports long-term data persistence. This shift aligns with our goal of deepening audience understanding and maximising the value of our first-party data assets.

We began our data journey in 2018 with a DMP but soon recognised its limitations—chiefly its reliance on anonymous data, fragmented customer views, and data synchronisation challenges. Our 2024 implementation of a CDP addresses these issues by unifying customer data, resolving identity challenges, enabling true personalisation, and providing the essential single customer view.

We now leverage first-party data and contextual insights from our news content to enhance segmentation in Google Ad Manager. This enriches our 360-degree customer profiles and allows for more refined audience segmentation based on behavioural patterns and content preferences. As a result, we can deliver highly targeted advertising and personalised experiences, such as tailored news and dynamically optimised newsletters.

Of course, technology alone isn't enough. Our approach is built on four essential pillars:

1. A strategic data acquisition and enrichment strategy.

2. A robust data management framework with common standards and cross-system integration.

3. Strict data quality control and governance.

4. A focus on activation—turning insights into meaningful actions.

Star Media Group’s transformation to a CDP is more than a technology upgrade—it’s a strategic imperative to maximise audience engagement, personalise experiences, and futureproof our growth in a data-driven world. This journey of leveraging first-party data through a CDP offers a compelling roadmap for business sustainability and unlocking new value in the evolving media ecosystem. We're just beginning this journey and are excited about the possibilities ahead as we continue refining and expanding our capabilities.
